The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Waverly Hill Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is a former tuberculosis hospital with a haunting past that beckons paranormal enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established in the early 20th century, the facility was built to accommodate the influx of patients suffering from tuberculosis, a disease that was rampant during that era. Constructed in 1910 and expanded in 1926, Waverly Hill could originally hold over 400 patients, who were often subjected to treatments that seem archaic by today's standards, including fresh air, sunshine, and a strict diet.
As the disease took its toll, many patients met a tragic fate within the walls of the sanatorium. By the late 1940s, advancements in medicine led to the decline of tuberculosis and the eventual closure of Waverly Hill in 1961. However, its history didn't end there. The building became synonymous with ghost stories and mysterious occurrences. Legends claim that over 63,000 souls perished within its confines, leading to numerous reports of hauntings and paranormal activity.
Today, Waverly Hill stands as a chilling yet fascinating pilgrimage site for those interested in dark tourism. Ghost hunters and curious visitors can explore its decaying hallways, haunted rooms, and notorious tunnel—dubbed the “body chute” for its grim purpose during the hospital's operation. Guided tours offer an eerie insight into the lives of patients and staff, making Waverly Hill Sanatorium a compelling destination for anyone drawn to the tales of those who once haunted its halls. Whether you're seeking a spine-tingling thrill or a deeper appreciation for history, this site offers an unforgettable experience wrapped in layers of mystery and sorrow.
Alleged Waverly Hills Sanatorium Hauntings
As you step into the crumbling corridors of Waverly Hills, be prepared to encounter an atmosphere thick with history and intrigue. Here are some of the most notable hauntings that have been documented at this infamous site:
The Spirit of Timmy
Many visitors have reported encounters with a playful spirit known as Timmy. Legend has it that Timmy was a young patient at the sanatorium who tragically passed away within its walls. He is said to enjoy playing with those who visit, often responding to questions or playing with balls and toys placed in the children’s ward. If you hear laughter or feel a sudden chill while exploring, it might just be Timmy seeking a friend.
The Mysterious Nurses
Ghostly figures dressed in period nurse uniforms have frequently been spotted wandering the halls. These apparitions are believed to belong to the dedicated nurses who cared for patients during the TB epidemic. Many guests have reported catching glimpses of these ethereal figures out of the corner of their eyes and occasionally hearing whispers of long-forgotten stories.
The Shadow People
Some of the sanatorium’s most unsettling reports come from visitors who claim to have seen shadowy figures darting through the halls. These shadow people are often described as tall and dark, moving quickly between rooms and disappearing into thin air. Many believe these entities are the souls of former patients who never received the closure they needed.
Cold Spots and Disembodied Voices
One of the most common experiences reported by guests is the sudden onset of cold spots in certain areas of the sanatorium. These chilling drafts often accompany strange sounds, including disembodied voices calling out for help or engaging in conversations from unseen sources. Many ghost hunters believe that these sensations are signs of a lingering spirit trying to communicate.
502 Ghost Hunt
Waverly Hills is notorious for its haunted room, Room 502. Historically, this room was where nurses would go to recover when they fell ill, but it is also the setting of tragic tales, including that of a nurse who is said to have taken her own life. Visitors to Room 502 often report intense feelings of despair and the sensation of being watched.

Tips for Your Investigation
Upon arrival, we were met by the guide that would be with us for the night. She gave us a great, informative overview tour of the building which the group appreciated and enjoyed. We assembled in the laundry room and prepared our gear. It is also the location in which we took breaks and had some snacks. If you haven’t been there before, it is a large space with bathrooms and a snack bar. The room is large and is where we met when we attended a public event several years ago.
We had a group of 9 which was no problem considering the size of Waverly Hills. We also rented the pumphouse for our overnight accommodations which was super convenient considering we investigated until 4 am. The pumphouse has 2 bedrooms with dorm styles bedding (multiple twin bunkbeds in each room) and 2 bathrooms. There are also showers which made it a great place to stay. NOTE: They escorted us back to the pumphouse after the investigation and it is all or nothing. When I say that I mean that everyone goes back together. They would not allow some of us to go back earlier than others so, if we tired before 4 am, we had to wait for the others to be done before we went back to the pumphouse.
Once we got settled and got our gear together, we split up into 3 smaller teams and went to different floors to investigate. We kept our eyes peeled and our ears open hoping to find evidence of paranormal activity. Depending on how you are to the stairs, you may be able to hear others on other floors. I took tons of photos and videos in the hopes of finding something in them. I ran my body cam for the entire night and still need to review that footage as of the date of this blog article.
Common reports about the 4th floor include hearing the distant sounds of coughing and whispering, remnants of the countless patients who once roamed the halls. Shadows dart from room to room, and some adventurous souls have even experienced the sensation of being touched or brushed past by unseen hands. One of the most infamous spots is Room 402, where it's said that the spirit of a nurse still roams. She reportedly cares for the lost souls in the hall, leading many to encounter her gentle presence. EVP recordings often pick up her name, and intriguing disembodied voices can be heard pleading for help.
The Morgue’s Grave Stories
The Waverly Hills morgue isn’t just a place where the deceased were laid to rest; it’s a portal to the past, steeped in sorrow and ghostly encounters. Originally designed to handle the high mortality rate from tuberculosis, the morgue was equipped with a body chute—a long, dark tunnel that allowed staff to discreetly transport the deceased without exposing living patients to the trauma of death. As you stand in this chilling space, you can almost hear the echoes of loneliness and fear.
Visitors to the morgue report a tapestry of ghostly encounters. Many claim to sense eerie cold spots, hear unexplained whispers, and even catch glimpses of shadowy figures moving through the dimly lit corridors. It's said that the spirits of patients who suffered in Waverly’s halls roam the premises, their lingering energy tied to the trauma they experienced. Ghost hunters have recorded unexplained EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena), capturing the voices of those who once inhabited this place, their desperate pleas for comfort still resonating through time.
While in the morgue, you know I had to climb into the body drawer and spend a little time in there. During our last visit, I was in the body drawer and we had several rempods lined up from inside the room and out towards the door. I was in the body drawer for just a few minutes when they all went off in order. It was as if an entity ran out of the room and lit them up in order! It was quieter this time however I recorded something that may or may not be paranormal.
I was recording while in the body drawer and saw one thing that piqued my interest. Pay attention to the rope at my feet at 7 - 9 seconds. Please tell me what you think about the footage. See the video below.
Haunted Body Chute at Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Originally constructed to transport deceased patients from the hospital to the morgue without alarming or upsetting the other patients, the chute served a grim purpose during the height of the tuberculosis epidemic. Patients who succumbed to their illness were often carted away quickly and discreetly through this hidden passage. Given the high mortality rate and the sheer number of bodies that passed through, it’s no wonder that this tunnel has garnered a reputation for being one of the most haunted locations within Waverly Hills.
The body chute was an interesting experience for us. The last time we walked down to the end and back. This time it was very damp and slippery so most of us only walked halfway down. Actually I think only two of us walked all the way down to the end. The moisture in the air gave the end of the body chute an extra spooky, foggy appearance. That made it difficult to debunk any light anomalies captured on camera or video, and the echoing made it hard to debunk sound anomalies.
If you go when it is damp, PLEASE be careful. One team member fell and banged herself up. There were two chairs at the top so you can easily just hang out and investigate from there.
For paranormal enthusiasts looking to experience the haunting history of Waverly Hills, the body chute is a must-see. Whether you visit during a ghost tour or join a ghost hunting group, prepare for an adventure that dives into the depths of both history and the supernatural. Uncover stories that intertwine the lives of those who once resided in the sanatorium and the restless spirits that may still linger within its walls.
My Experiences
Overall our collective experiences were mixed. I could definitely feel energies/entities around us but nothing felt particularly ominous or negative. A couple of the group members also felt their presence(s) although we don’t know how many were around us. There were moments where I felt like they were playing cat and mouse with us because we would hear something but then found nothing when we went to investigate.
A few of us also saw shadows in the halls from a distance and in a few of the rooms as we walked the long, dark halls. Again, most of that seemed focused on one floor. We had some seemingly random rempod activity in areas where nothing environmental should be affecting it and couldn’t really debunk it. There was no scenario to recreate so I am essentially throwing it out as far as evidence goes.
The 3rd and 4th floors were the most active although, in my opinion, we experienced nothing profound. We definitely had the feeling of being watched in various places on all floors but the top two floors ended up being our focus.
Tips for Your Investigation
Dress for the Occasion: Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Depending on when you go, it may get chilly at night!
Bring Extra Batteries: Paranormal investigations can drain devices quickly—better safe than sorry!
Stay Safe: Stick with your group and be mindful of your surroundings. Keep in mind that they often have people break in and you could have random strangers onsite. We always use the buddy system!
Accommodations: Rent the pumphouse for convenience. It sleeps up to 16 people and has multiple bathrooms and showers.
Contamination: Sound travels so be mindful when you are near the stairwell. EVP sessions are challenging in a place this size but absolutely doable if you coordinate with other investigators.
Conclusion
Get ready to walk the halls where shadows lurk and whispers of the past beckon! Whether you're a seasoned investigator or a curious traveler, this trip promises an adventure drenched in history and paranormal encounters. Remember: the spirits may be waiting for you!
Make this beautiful day count!
